✅ Package of Practices – Hybrid Cotton BG II (Gossypium hirsutum)
Climate & Soil
Thrives in tropical and subtropical climates with plenty of sunshine and warmth (25–35°C). Requires deep, well-drained fertile black cotton soils (Vertisols) or alluvial sandy loams with good water retention and pH 6.5–8.5.
🌱 Botany
Erect, robust semi-determinate branching habit with sturdy central stem. Produces profuse sympodial branches, large dark green leaves, cream-coloured flowers turning pink, and large 4–5 locule bolls (5.0–5.5 g).
🌾 Sowing & Seed Rate
Sow with onset of monsoon or under assured pre-monsoon irrigation. Seed rate: 1 packet (450g BG II + 25g Non-Bt refuge) per 0.4 hectare (1 acre). Spacing: 120 x 45 cm or 90 x 60 cm. Sowing depth: 3–4 cm. Dibble 1 seed per hill.
🚜 Land Preparation
Deep summer ploughing followed by 2 cross-harrowings. Form ridges and furrows or broad beds. Apply 10–12 MT/ha well-rotted FYM/compost.
🌿 Manures & Fertilizers
NPK recommendation: 120:60:60 kg/ha. Apply full P2O5 and 25% N and K2O at basal. Top dress remaining N and K in 3 equal splits: squaring stage (30 DAS), flowering (60 DAS), and peak boll development (90 DAS). Foliar spray of 1% 19:19:19 and 0.5% Boron.
🚫 Weed Management
Pre-emergence Pendimethalin 38.7 CS @ 2.5 ml/L within 48 hours of sowing. Inter-cultivation with bullock/tractor hoe at 30, 45, and 60 DAS, followed by manual weeding around hills.
💧 Irrigation Schedule
Requires 5–7 irrigations depending on rainfall. Critical stages: seedling emergence, squaring, peak flowering, and boll filling. Avoid water logging and drought stress during flowering.
🛡️ Plant Protection – Pests
Sucking pests (Jassids, Whiteflies, Thrips, Aphids): Spray Flonicamid 50 WG @ 0.3 g/L or Dinotefuran 20 SG @ 0.3 g/L. Spodoptera / Mirid bugs: Spray Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.3 ml/L or Emamectin Benzoate 5 SG @ 0.4 g/L.
🛡️ Plant Protection – Diseases
Bacterial Leaf Blight: Spray Copper Oxychloride 50 WP @ 2.5 g/L + Streptocycline @ 0.1 g/L. Grey Mildew / Alternaria: Spray Pyraclostrobin 20 WG @ 1 g/L or Carbendazim + Mancozeb @ 2 g/L.
🌾 Harvesting, Threshing & Yield
Pick cotton in morning hours when bolls have burst fully and dried. Store clean kapas free from dried bracts and trash in well-ventilated dry space. Average yield: 25–35 q/ha.
